There are many reasons for a slow computer such as a hardware problem, too many programs running in the background, running memory hogging applications, too many Windows visual effects (it is a GUI after all), and maybe even a virus or spyware infection. Some people decide for some reason that they just need to buy more ram. But, I always like to see what can be tweaked (or tuned-up) for free to squeeze out the most performance from the hardware I already have before I would go out and buy more ram.
Before we get to the free method, if you know you are running a memory intensive Antivirus program, you could remove it and switch to a less memory hogging Antivirus program. If your antivirus is already expired, this would be a great time to do this step but the best ones are not free. If you have browsed this site, you know what we recommend.
Aside from choosing to run less memory intensive Security Software that you might have to whip out a credit card for, there are a few free methods to speed-up your PC using built-in Windows settings.
- Selective Startup
- Disabling Unnecessary Services
- Disabling certain Visual Effects under Performance Options in Advanced System Settings
In this post, I’ll be presenting a Video on Method #3 to show you how to customize the Visual Effects settings. Now, you could turn them all off, and get the best performance increase, but you will end-up with a very classic Windows looks with no frills. So I’ll be showing you which of these visual effects settings to keep enabled to get what I consider the best balance between Performance and Visual Effects. Of course, you can tweak these settings to fit your needs.
The video presentation below shows exactly how to do this for Windows Vista, although the procedure is very similar for Windows XP and Windows 7 ( although the available visual effects for XP and 7 will vary somewhat).
After watching the brief video below, you will be able to speed-up your computer is just a few minutes!
